The University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), situated in China's capital Beijing, was founded in 1951 as the Beijing Institute of Foreign Trade. In 1960 it was designated as a "key university" by the government for its outstanding programs. In May 1997 UIBE was put on the list of "Project 211" universities, a governmental program aimed at turning about 100 Chinese universities into exceptionally high quality academic institutions in the new century.

In the year of 2000, UIBE has become one of the state universities under the leadership of the Ministry of Education, and in June of the same year it merged with China Institute of Finance, from then on, it has become one of the leaders not only in the studies of economics and business management, but also in finance.

UIBE consists of over 20 academic schools, departments and research centers. Among the over 30 bachelor, master and doctoral programs that UIBE offers, International Trade, International Business Management, International Economic Law, and English Language have been designated as key programs under "Project 211".

UIBE receives support and assistance from government agencies, business leaders, corporations and consortiums domestically and externally. More than 20 scholarships and awards have been established at the university level – even more at the School and department levels.

UIBE is one of the first universities in China to have initiated academic exchanges with foreign academic institutions. UIBE has established long-term cooperative relation with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia and Japan. The university's sponsors include General Motors (Germany), Fuji Bank (Japan), CGNU plc (the United Kingdom) and Hancock Insurance (the United States). The continued expansion of international exchanges and corporation has enabled UIBE to enhance the “going-international” dimension of its grand strategy.
